Local Venezuelan reacts to the US’ attack and capture of President Maduro
PENDER COUNTY, NC (WWAY)–“I opened the call, and my dad said it was bombing in Caracas! Trump is in here; U.S. military is here!”
That was the call Miguel Navarro, owner of “Made in Venezuela” food truck, got from his dad after the U.S. military operation that happened in Venezuela to capture Nicolas Maduro on Saturday morning.
Navarro, who lives near Surf City, says he moved to the United States in 2015 on political asylum because he was threatened with being killed under the regime of Maduro. With only 45 dollars in his pockets, Navarro says it was a struggle to leave his country.
“I left my profession, I got different jobs, I went to a different country, different language, different life, that was really hard”, said Navarro.
Now 10 years later, he owns a successful food truck that delivers delicious Venezuelan food like Arepas, to all over the cape fear region from Surf City to Wilmington. His business is now not the only thing he looks forward to, as the news that happened on Saturday morning was something he had been waiting for a long time.
“That news was amazing, because Venezuelans have been waiting on it for a long time. If you protest in the country, you go to jail. If you talk bad about the government you can go to jail or even be killed”, said Navarro.
While he praises the works of the U.S. military, others disagree. In Charlotte, dozens of people gathered to protest the actions of President Trump, some claiming it was an invasion without any rule on law. Other protestors feel that all he hopes is to control the oil in the country.
“Bombing my homeland felt surreal, followed quickly by an uncontrollable worry for my loved ones still in Venezuela. The fact is trump does not care about the 80,000 Americans who died last year from a drug overdose, nor does he care about the service members carrying out his heinous orders”, said one protestor.
As President trump announced that the U.S. will temporarily “run” Venezuela, Navarro is ultimately grateful for the help the country is providing.
“God bless America, because nobody in the world helped Venezuela. I am super grateful for this country.”
