Local WWII Veteran celebrates 100th birthday
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — A local World War II veteran celebrated his 100th birthday at Casey’s Buffet in Wilmington on Saturday.
Oliver Aaron Boykin was surprised by friends and family for the milestone celebration. His family said it wasn’t easy to change his routine for the surprise — since even at 100 years old, Boykin still drives himself every morning to McDonald’s, the Riverwalk, and Greenfield Lake Park.
Boykin served in the U.S. Navy and spent part of the celebration watching a slideshow of photos his family put together.
“He is really caring… he’ll care more about you than himself, and it’s been a pleasure for him to live with me since 2008… and my favorite—he’s my favorite,” said his niece, Alice Fennell.
When asked how he was feeling on his big day, Boykin said, “Same as yesterday… haha.”
Boykin served on the USS Midway aircraft carrier from 1943, at 18 years old, until 1947.
He was born May 22, 1925.
