Lowe’s renovates old building for Boys and Girls Club for free

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — The Community Boys and Girls Club in Wilmington officially has another building after Lowe’s Home Improvement stepped in to help in a big way.

Boys and Girls Club Vice Chairman Carlos Braxton said the building at 906 Fanning Street was given to them a few years ago by the city, but they have not been able to use it because it had so many issues that needed to be fixed.

Braxton Said some folks from Lowe’s Home Improvement heard their story and decided to help. Lowe’s Store Manager Bill Ferimer said it took one week, about 650 hours, more than 50 volunteers and about $40,000 to turn the building around.

“It looked like HGTV out here,” Ferimer said.

Braxton said the kids love it.

“They were all happy, running around jumping,” Braxton said. “You know, it’s cool in here. We haven’t always had the most temperature pleasant buildings, but they were just excited. Excited about the opportunity to have a new place to study. They have a new place to hang out. They have a new place to play video games and they are all very appreciative of it as we are.”

Braxton said they now have brand new paint, furniture, electrical, and so much more. He said this story brought out the best in everybody.

“We are blessed for the opportunity for Lowe’s to come out and help us in this way,” Braxton said.

Braxton said the Boys and Girls Club has a big fundraising event coming up. It is a golf tournament at the Beau Rivage Golf Course on September 29 and it benefits the club.
