WILMINGTON, N.C. (WWAY) — Coming off a trip to the state championship last season, Laney baseball took their home opener 3-2 over South Brunswick on Tuesday.

The Cougars hit a two run blast early on, but some small ball by the Bucs closed that gap.

It started with Owen Gore rocking a triple to center field to send Dom Civelli home in the 2nd. Civelli then drove in the game tying run in the 4th followed by the game winner in the 6th.

This came after the senior gave up that pair of South Brunswick scores as Laney’s starting pitcher.

“I knew I had good stuff going in,” Civelli said. “Gave up a bomb there in the 1st and just had to get back to my stuff. It was huge. We completely shifted. I know I let the guys down a little bit there in the 1st inning, but we got the bats going a little bit and then we got loud.”
