Machine blamed for holdup in NC registration stickers

GREENSBORO, N.C. (AP) – The Division of Motor Vehicles says problems with a machine that processes mail is responsible for the delay in getting North Carolina motorists their registration stickers that were due June 30.

The News & Record of Greensboro reported a machine that handles 7,500 pieces of mail each day broke earlier this month. The agency usually mails 600,000 stickers each month.

DMV Commissioner Kelly J. Thomas said the agency is a week behind its normal turn-around rate of five to seven days. Thomas says motorists that did not get their stickers before the July 15 grace period will not be ticketed if they submitted their request in time.

Thomas says the database used to check registration is up to date, even though the mailing of the stickers is behind schedule.
