Man arrested following 130 mph chase through Columbus County

COLUMBUS COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — A man has been arrested following a high-speed chase through Columbus County.

The Sheriff’s Office says they observed a blue Chrysler 300 traveling North on US 701 in the area of Smyrna Road on Monday.

The deputy on scene says they observed the strong smell of marijuana.

Upon activating blue lights, the Sheriff’s Office says the vehicle proceeded through a red light at Smyrna Road and US 701. They say the suspect’s vehicle carelessly and recklessly drove into oncoming traffic ignoring posted stop signs and speed limits. Speeds reached 130 MPH multiple times during the pursuit, according to the Sheriff’s Office.

Jacques Vereen was taken into custody and transported to the Columbus County Detention Center under an $11,000 secured bond.

The passenger identified as I’Keir Murchison, according to the Sheriff’s Office, had outstanding warrants from Bladen County Sheriff’s Office and was arrested and transported to the Columbus County Law Enforcement Center and was given a $8,000 bond.
