NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — A man has been charged with murder in New Hanover County.

Elvin Noel Baca, 34, was arrested Wednesday in the 5000 block of Myrtle Grove Road on charges of first degree murder and conceal/fail report a death.

Baca is accused of killing his roommate, Lawrence Grabka, and burying the body in the backyard, according to the New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office.

Grabka was reported missing Wednesday by a friend, who had not heard from him for several days.

“He’s not home, his wallet’s there, his phone is there. He has no car or license. I take him on, to his grocery shopping. I take him for all of his needs,” the friend said during their call to 911.

The Sheriff’s Office responded for a welfare check, finding Grabka’s body in a shallow grave.

“The circumstances surrounding this case are deeply concerning, and our thoughts are with the victim’s loved ones during this difficult time; our priority remains seeking justice for the victim,” stated Sheriff McMahon.

Baca made his first court appearance Thursday morning and was given a court-appointed attorney

He was given no bond. Baca’s next court date is April 18th.
