Man drowns trying to free friend’s boat from spillway

FOUR OAKS, N.C. (AP) – A man has died trying to help a friend whose boat got stuck on a spillway at a North Carolina lake.

Authorities told media outlets that four friends were out fishing in two boats Friday at Holt Lake in Johnston County when one of the boats ran aground on the lake’s concrete spillway.

North Carolina Wildlife officers said an older man in the second boat fell into the water as he tried to free the stuck boat and went under.

Authorities say the others quickly rescued the man, but he could not be revived.

Officials say they will release the victim’s name after his family is notified of his death.
