Man in custody after NHSO says he jumped off bridge in attempt to avoid arrest

NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — A man is facing several charges after authorities say he jumped off a New Hanover County bridge while trying to avoid arrest early Sunday morning.

Deputies say they responded around 1:00 a.m. after Curtis Heskett wrecked his vehicle while driving over the Cape Fear Memorial Bridge.

Investigators say Heskett got out of the car and ran when law enforcement arrived.

Deputies say he later reached the Thomas Rhodes Bridge, where he raised a hatchet over his head before jumping into the Cape Fear River. Wilmington Fire deployed a boat to help pull him from the water, and he was taken into custody.

Heskett was booked into the New Hanover County Detention Facility under a $60,000 bond.
He faces multiple charges, including:
  • Assault with a deadly weapon on a government official (felony)
  • Injury to personal property (misdemeanor)
  • Carrying a concealed weapon other than a gun (misdemeanor)
  • Intoxicated and disruptive (misdemeanor)
  • Multiple counts of resisting, delaying, or obstructing public officers (misdemeanor)
  • False report to law enforcement (misdemeanor)
  • Probation violation (felony)
