Man killed when ATV collides with deputy’s cruiser

SANFORD, NC (AP) — The North Carolina State Highway Patrol is investigating after a man riding an all- terrain vehicle was killed when his ATV collided with a cruiser driven by a Lee County sheriff’s deputy.

The accident happened about 1 a.m. on Friday near Sanford.

Highway Patrol Sgt. Jonathan Davis tells local media outlets that the victim was 31-year-old Shelton Lee McLean, whose address was not immediately available.

Authorities say the ATV was traveling down the middle line of a road when it collided with the cruiser. The impact spun the ATV around and into a mailbox, throwing the victim from the vehicle.

The deputy was treated for minor injuries and released from a hospital.
