BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — A man running for Brunswick County Commissioner was found not guilty on a domestic violence charge.

Clifton Cheek of Ocean Isle Beach was accused of “grabbing the victim and tackling him to the ground…the defendant was the current parent of the child,” per a warrant.

Court documents say that Cheek was found not guilty in Brunswick County court on January 2nd.

He was arrested on November 9th and held on a $1,000 bond. Cheek posted bond the following day.

The Cheek family released the following statement regarding the incident:

“Our family experienced a difficult and deeply personal situation in November 2025, which became public. The legal process has now concluded, and Clifton “Clif” Cheek was found not guilty of the domestic violence charge on January 2, 2026 in Brunswick County District Court. We respect the judicial system and are grateful this matter has been resolved. While we recognize public interest in local elections, we also believe families should be allowed to address personal matters privately and responsibly. We are moving forward together as a family and remain committed to serving Brunswick County in a positive and constructive way. Clif remains focused on the issues that matter most to residents across the county — strong schools, public safety, responsible budgeting, smart growth planning, and protecting our quality of life.”
