Man shot to death by deputies in South Carolina

AIKEN, SC (AP) — Authorities in South Carolina say a man was shot to death in a confrontation with sheriff’s deputies.

Coroner Tim Carlton said in a statement that 57-year-old Brian Gavin died at his home shortly after 9:30 p.m. Wednesday.

Carlton says Aiken County deputies had been called to a report of a domestic dispute at the home.

Sheriff’s Capt. Nick Gallam told local media that officers left after the situation appeared to be under control but returned after getting a report that shots had been fired.

Gallam said when they returned they found a man pointing a gun at a female. She was not hurt.

The State Law Enforcement Division is investigating. Neither SLED nor the sheriff’s office returned messages early Thursday seeking more information.

An autopsy is planned Thursday in Newberry.
