Manchester United calls off game, evacuates stadium after suspicious package found

Old Trafford Stadium, home to Manchester United’s soccer team, was evacuated Sunday afternoon preceding a match against Bournemouth in the Premier League, after a suspicious package was found inside, police said.

Kick off, which was set for 3 p.m. local time, had been briefly delayed before the match was cancelled entirely on the recommendation of police.

The official Twitter account for Manchester United tweeted updates of the events at the stadium.

The phrase “operation red code” was announced over stadium loudspeakers, as players, who were warming up at the time, were ordered to exit the field. Security personnel assisted fans out of the stadium and bomb sniffing dogs were brought in to scan the stands for additional threats.
