Many hit the beach to experience Irma’s impacts

KURE BEACH, NC (WWAY) — It is a far cry from what Florida and other southern states are dealing with, but the Cape Fear is still feeling some effects from Irma.

As the waves were crashing into the beaches by Fort Fisher, dozens of people were coming out to watch. Some said that as worried as they may be, this was a spectacle worth seeing. As the winds and waves got stronger, people were still hit the beaches into the night.

“I guess we don’t really see storms, like huge hit Carolina Beach. So, it is kind of cool to see what could happen,” Sarah Marchant said.

“It’s cool. The waves, huge coming in hitting the rocks, splashing, there nothing like it,” Tyler Swanson said.

Winds really picked up, but there was not much rain earlier in the day. Some people described it as a moment to embrace what mother nature has to offer.

“It’s just an incredible Mother Nature thing that’s going on and we’re lucky enough to be safe,” Kathleen Morrison said.

The winds got stronger into the night, whipping up sand and water. Though many enjoyed taking in the sights and sounds of the storm, it’s important to remember that safety is priority.

“I just hope everybody is safe and have fun in the storm,” Swanson said.

“If you’re not used to it, definitely stay indoors, but I mean if you’ve been through it before, like worse than this, than yeah, come out and see what is going on,” Marchant said.
