Marriage equality supporters celebrate after historic ruling
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — The U.S. Supreme Court ruled that gay and lesbian couples across the country have a constitutional right to marry. After it was official gay marriage supporters were in downtown Wilmington celebrating the ruling.
It was a lot to take in for marriage equality supporters when it comes to the supreme court decision to make gay marriage legal in every state.
“My reaction was extremely emotional I confess first tears and feeling like a huge lead weight had been lifted off my shoulders,” said Jeff Mills.
Jeff mills got to share this moment with his partner and his mother Rosalian Mills.
“I was joyful with Jeffery when it came through and it was long overdue,” said Rosalian Mills.
This is a moment many were waiting for including Regina Cicchetti and Susan Zimmer, who say they’ve been together for 45 years.
“We never thought years ago that this would ever happen in our lifetime but we are thrilled that it has and it’s good to be part of it,” said Zimmer.
Scott Sellers, co-chair of Cape Fear Equality, says the want to celebrate their victory but the fight continues.
“We look it at kind of as a mile stone equality for us but overall it’s a stepping stone toward true equality,” said Sellers. “I think going forward we are no longer going to have to ask for acceptance because now we know we don’t need permission.”
