Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration Committee holds news conference ahead of events

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Martin Luther King Day is one week away and we’re learning more about events in Wilmington planned to mark the slain civil rights leader’s birthday.

Several community members and Wilmington P.D. gathered at the MLK Community Center on Monday.

This year will mark the 22nd annual MLK celebration.

The theme for this year is ‘Where Do We Go From Here.’

Hollis Briggs is the CEO of Southeastern N.C.’s Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration Committee.

He said that this is a time to bring the community together and remember the impact of the civil rights movement.

“I want people to be one, be more one. Dr. King would want us to be together and think as one and try to move the needle forward in reference to peace in the United States right now,” Briggs said.

The next event held at the community center will be its ‘Conversation for Peace’. It will take place this upcoming Thursday, January 11, at 6:30 p.m..
