Mayor declares ‘Share the Warmth Day’ in Wilmington to support energy-assistance program

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Mayor Bill Saffo has declared December 12 as ‘Share the Warmth Day’ in Wilmington, encouraging the community to support a long-running program that helps neighbors pay their energy bills during times of need.

Share the Warmth, operated by Piedmont Natural Gas, provides emergency financial assistance for households struggling to cover energy costs, which includes propane, electricity and natural gas. The program is available year-round and distributes 100% of donated funds directly to local families through nonprofit partners.

Mayor Saffo said the proclamation is meant to raise awareness as colder weather approaches.

“No one should face uncertainty about how to stay warm during the winter months,” Saffo said. “By joining together, we can help ensure our neighbors in need can keep the heat on.”

Piedmont Natural Gas leaders hope the proclamation will encourage more residents to take part, noting that even small contributions can make a meaningful difference.

“Too many families face difficult choices when the weather turns cold,” said Brian Weisker, senior vice president and president of Piedmont Natural Gas. “We chose December 12, or 12/12, as ‘Share the Warmth Day’ to remind us that for no more than $12 a year, each of us can make an impact.”

Piedmont customers can donate through the company’s Round Up program, which rounds their monthly bill to the nearest dollar and sends the difference to Share the Warmth. The fund also accepts direct donations from community members and receives an annual contribution from Piedmont.
