Mayor Saffo addresses hope for Echo Farms plan

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) – This morning, Wilmington Mayor Bill Saffo spoke about proposed plans to redevelop the Echo Farms Golf Course.

Matrix wants to build hundreds of single family homes, apartments and town homes on the land. They officially submitted the plans on Friday, even though word of the proposed redevelopment first leaked over the summer. That has created a lot controversy with many people who live at Echo Farms. Recently, property owners made an unprecedented move by calling for the land to be rezoned.

Mayor  Saffo addressed the Echo Farms situation after a city council agenda briefing. He says he wants to see the owner of the property and the residents of Echo Farms come together.

“Hopefully that the owner of the property reaches out to the property owners at Echo Farms and sits down with them and starts talking about how this plan is going to be implemented,” Mayor Bill Saffo said. “Hopefully they address the needs and the wants and the concerns that the homeowners at Echo Farms have shared.”

Mayor Saffo fears that having one property owner asking for another property owners land to be rezoned can have legal implications.  He adds that the council will look into this very seriously to make sure things are handled correctly.
