Governor McCrory talks HB 2 in Wrightsville Beach
WRIGHTSVILLE BEACH, NC (WWAY) — Today in Raleigh, folks on both sides of the controversial law gathered as a bill asking for a full repeal of House Bill 2 was filed by some House Democrats.
“It’s not gonna happen. Again, the Democrats started this ridiculous argument,” said Governor Pat McCrory about the repeal.
McCrory said he does not think the bill will be successful.
“This started in a city with overreaching regulations to the private sector. I don’t want government to be in the private sector’s business of telling what bathrooms people should use or locker rooms people should use. That’s their job,” said McCrory.
The Governor calls House Bill 2 a “common sense” response to the Charlotte bathroom ruling.
“In our high schools, junior highs, in our universities we’re going to do it the way we’ve always done it and then make special exceptions for other people with unique needs and make special arrangements for those people,” McCrory said.
He added he never completely agreed with House Bill 2 and everything that was included in it.
So why sign the bill if he didn’t agree with it?
“Because I didn’t have a line item veto. And I have to sign a lot of bills where budget bills I don’t agree with everything, but that main crux of the bill was overturning an overreaching local ordinance by the left wing part of the democratic party,” McCrory said.
He said teacher pay raises are a top priority for him right now and he’s hoping legislators will work on that as well as putting back the ability to sue for discrimination in state courts during the short session.
