McCrory’s education adviser leaving to join national group
RALEIGH, NC (AP) — North Carolina Gov. Pat McCrory’s education adviser since 2013 is leaving the administration to join a national advocacy group focused on extending the influence of former Teach for America program members.
Eric Guckian leaves at the end of July to become a vice president at the Leadership for Educational Equity in Washington.
McCrory announced Guckian’s departure on Tuesday, the day before the next meeting of the North Carolina Education Cabinet, which McCrory credits Guckian for helping to revive. The Cabinet is comprised of top leaders of education from pre-kindergarten to college.
McCrory’s office says Guckian helped get teacher raises and other education spending through the legislature, develop a teacher advisory committee and implement legislation for community college courses in high-demand fields.
The governor says he’ll name Guckian’s successor soon.
