McGarry Repeats as CAA Rookie-of-the-Week
RICHMOND, Virginia (UNCWSports.com) – UNCW freshman midfielder Molly McGarry has earned her second straight Colonial Athletic Association Women’s Soccer Rookie-of-the-Week Award.
The Charlotte, N.C., product scored both of the Seahawks’ goals in their 2-1 victory over Campbell on Sunday, marking McGarry’s first career multi-goal game.
McGarry gave the Seahawks a 1-0 lead just one minute into the game when she headed in a corner kick from senior forward Serenity Waters. She increased the advantage to 2-0 in the closing minutes of the opening stanza by heading in a corner kick from redshirt sophomore forward Olivia Szeker-Cortes.
“Molly is continuing to find her 90-minute rhythm and she adds an attacking dimension to our midfield,” Coach Paul Cairney said. “She was able to score those goals after receiving great services from Serenity and Olivia on the two corner kicks. I know Molly shares this award with her teammates.”
The Seahawks’ leading scorer with four goals and one assist, McGarry has started 9-of-10 games this season and has a team-high 28 shots.
UNCW, which finished its non-conference schedule with a 4-5-1 record, begins Colonial Athletic Association play this week with a pair of road contests at Elon and Hofstra.
