BOLIVIA, NC (WWAY) — On January 6th, 1960, National Airlines Flight 2511 crashed near Galloway Road in Bolivia.

66 years later, a memorial plaque was unveiled at the Bolivia Volunteer Fire Department station honoring the victims and recognizing the residents who responded in the aftermath.

Brunswick County Commissioners and staff joined residents and family member of those affected at the unveiling.

29 passengers and 5 crew members on board died in the crash, no one survived. The flight was en route from New York City to Miami and is the second-known bombing of a commercial airliner in the country.

The Commissioners adopted a resolution in April 2025 in support of a North Carolina Historical Marker being placed at the crash site off Galloway Road. Work continues toward this effort, which requires approval from the Highway Historical Marker Advisory Committee.
