Memorial service for Alquon Flowers
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Family and friends gathered today to remember a Wilmington teenager. Alquon Flowers went missing in July of 2011 and just last month his remains were found in Brunswick County.
The memorial was held at Macedonia Missionary Baptist Church this afternoon. Associate Minister Gaysheron Bell said that she did not know Alquon and his family well, but thought that it was important to come out today to show support. She said she hopes she can help the family through the grieving process.
“Knowing that there is someone here for them whether it be just being there or whether it’s spiritual support or financial support or whatever that we can be for the family. Hopefully that can come out of this,” said Bell.
We sat down with Alquon’s mother Keesha Haywood after the memorial service.
“We finally got what we’d been looking for. It didn’t just devastate me, it devastated my whole family,” said Haywood. ” The longest 4 and a half, excruciating years possible.”
Although it was not the answer the family was hoping for, after all this time they now have an answer and can begin to move forward.
“I’m taking it one day at a time. It’s still with trust, I’m letting God order my steps and just give me the strength that I need to see another day,” said Haywood.
