Softball tournament honors late chef, benefits scholarship fund

CAROLINA BEACH, NC (WWAY) — In Carolina Beach, friends playing softball may just look like fun and games but this game has much more to it.

In honor of former Michael’s Seafood owner, the Michael McGowan softball tournament is raising money to go to community improvement and a scholarship at Cape Fear Community College.

It started as friends just playing softball trying to help raise money towards the scholarship in McGowan’s name but it turned into much more.

“We’ve continued on where half that money go towards that endowed scholarship to grow it as well as half the money being reinvested in Mike Chappel Park for capital improvements” said tournament co-organizer Brett Keeler.

This was the fourth year for the softball game. They play knowing that they’re having fun and helping towards a good cause
