Midtown Wilmington YMCA gearing up for major expansion

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — The Midtown YMCA on George Anderson Drive is hoping to get the green light from the city on a major expansion.

Earlier this month, the YMCA of Southeastern North Carolina submitted plans to the city for a $15 million expansion that would include a new aquatics center, classrooms, and a multi-use outdoor space.

The expansion would more than double the midtown y’s current footprint from 16,000 square feet to around 48,000.

President and CEO Dick Jones says the Y is hoping to bring more amenities to its members in Wilmington.

“There is a lot of families moving into town, a lot of different programs that are needed and so we’re trying to keep pace with that in terms of child care and youth activities like youth sports, senior programming in our facilities, and now an expansion of our facilities here with the aquatic center and outdoor play areas,” he said.

The project went before the city’s technical review committee Thursday morning. Jones says the meeting went well, and that the project can move forward.
