Military families given 30 days to vacate Slocum Village
HAVELOCK, NC (WCTI) — The housing shortage in the wake of Hurricane Florence is hitting everyone hard — including our military community.
Residents in one Havelock community said they’re being forced to leave their homes.
Slocum Village Neighborhood is a military housing community about five minutes from Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point.
Orginally, the homes in the Slocum housing community were offered to active-duty and reserve military members, contractors, geo-bachelors, retirees, DOD civilians and surviving military spouses. Eventually, civilians with no military background were able to rent homes in the community.
Sarah Hopson, an Air Force veteran, and her family live in the community for now. They got the startling news last week, “I got an email first. It said basically this serves as your 30-day notice to vacate,” said Hopson.
