Miracles were made Saturday during a baseball game

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Saturday at the ball park was a day full of runs and outs, but it was so much more than that.

Members of the New Hanover County Fire Department came together with the Miracle League to play a baseball game.

The game was part of the event that New Hanover Fire helped put on to provide fire safety education and give back to their community.

“Every time we do something for the community it makes us feel very proud to be fire fighters.” New Hanover County Fire and Rescue Captain Benjamin Bobzien said.

The fire fighters volunteered to be buddies alongside the players of the Miracle Baseball League.

It’s a way to get children and adults with special needs or disabilities involved in a sport that they love to play.

“I could play year round if I could. I love baseball.” Erin Cunnane, a player in the game, said.

With many of these players having a form of disability, playing in this game is nothing short of a miracle.

One example is Maggie and Bonnie Swann.

When they were born they were diagnosed with Cerebral Palsy and told that they wouldn’t be able to walk or talk.

Today, they’re having fun and playing baseball and their grandmother says it’s exactly what they along with everyone else here needs.

“It’s just as good for us as it is for the special needs.” Sharron Swann said.

These players are who the game is all about and the men and women of the New Hanover Fire Department say they are lucky to be part of it.

“These guys are amazing, the players and buddies as well.” Bobzien said.

These runs and outs are just living proof miracles happen every day.
