WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Two 12-year-olds reported missing Monday were located Wednesday at a Walmart on Carolina Beach Road and taken to Novant Health Main Campus for evaluation under involuntary commitment.

Ella Kolland and Mina Stevens, who attend Murray Middle School, had been reported missing by their families after leaving home early Monday morning. According to Kolland’s mother, the teens, who identify as non-binary, had been trying to be together romantically.

The New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office confirmed both teens were found safe and thanked the community for its assistance.

Kolland’s mother says the teens will receive further care and monitoring as needed.
