MLK Center hands out 350 thanksgiving meals to seniors

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Some seniors in Wilmington don’t have to shop because a group of volunteers came together to give away Thanksgiving meals.

The MLK center held its 19th annual Thanksgiving meal giveaway for those in the community 55 years and older.

Each meal box had all the traditional helpings of a Thanksgiving meal, from turkey and stuffing to mac and cheese and green beans.

Mary Jones is the center’s recreation supervisor.

She said this event helps make seniors feel like part of their local community.

“Because around the holidays, it is a moment of fellowship for families and friends,” Jones said. “And some of our seniors do not have the opportunity to have family and friends around them. So we afford them the opportunity to come in, grab a bag, show love, be great community leaders and just have a wonderful time.

The center made and handed out more than 350 meals in just 2 hours
