Mom charged with abandoning kids at police station in Charlotte

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) – Charlotte-Mecklenburg police have charged a mother after she allegedly abandoned a baby boy and his toddler sister outside two separate police stations.

Police said in a release the children were left unattended on Thursday.

On Friday 19-year-old Nazarene Porter was charged with two counts of child neglect. It was not immediately known if she had an attorney.

The children were in good health and were in foster care as of Friday night. The little boy is about 4 months old while his sister is about 2.

North Carolina has a safe surrender law, allowing parents to leave infants with health care workers, firefighters or other such worker within a week of a child’s birth.

But it is against the law to leave children unattended, even at a safe surrender location.
