Mom pleads guilty in attempted murder of daughter

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — A mother pleaded guilty in the attempted murder of her 9-year-old daughter.

Jeannie Lynn Marvel, 51, pleaded guilty to attempted first degree murder, child abuse inflicting serious bodily injury and cruelty to animal.

In September of 2012, Marvel fed her daughter and cat a smoothie that was laced with toxic substances. Rodent poison and several medications were taken from the kitchen counter of the home. The child tested positive for benzodiazepines while being treated at New Hanover Regional Medical Center.

She was sentenced to at least 9 years in prison.
