Moores Creek Battlefield celebrates 243rd anniversary since historic battle
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) – Each year, we celebrate the anniversary of the Battle of Moore’s Creek Bridge.
No matter the occasion, a 243rd anniversary calls for a weekend long celebration. The Battle of Moore’s Creek Bridge was a stunning defeat at the hands of North Carolina patriots in 1776.
The anniversary weekend was filled with battle demonstrations and stories beyond the battle field.
“We talk about the everyday life experiences in the 18th century. Right now we’re making bread as you would in the 18th century. We have folks that will give you a tour through an 18th century kitchen, we have other folks that will give you a demonstration on 18th century medicine, wood working and black smithing,” said Ricardo Perez, the former superintendent of the battlefield and volunteer.
Park rangers take pride in being able to make this event free of charge.
“This year one of the biggest things we have is such a great turn out of volunteers. We actually have over 200 living historians out here today, so in terms of the raw number of volunteers it’s a great showing and it also just means so much more immersion for anybody who’s out here,” Ranger Nate Toering said.
Rangers and other park staff are already looking forward to next year’s celebration.
