More WPD staff may be needed to handle new body cams
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — City Council tomorrow will consider using a grant to help buy more body cams for the Wilmington Police Department, but the police chief says he needs more people to help with the video.
A city spokeswoman says Chief Ralph Evangelous talked to council this morning about possibly hiring one person to manage the video and maybe one or two part-time, retired officers to go through it on a regular basis.
Council is considering using a $45,000 state grant to help cover $60,000 to get 70 body cams. WPD already has 37 cameras for its officers.
