WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Jonathan Fariss, a sixth-grade science teacher at Murray Middle School, has been named New Hanover County Schools Rookie of the Year.

Fariss was recognized during this year’s Rookie of the Year Banquet alongside other finalists.

Fariss graduated from Appalachian State University in May 2023 with a Bachelor of Science in Middle Grades Education, concentrating in science and mathematics. He began teaching at Murray Middle School in April 2025.

He said he is guided by the principle “Integrity First” and is committed to helping students build the character and confidence to do what is right, even when no one is watching. Fariss believes fostering integrity supports both academic success and personal growth.

Fariss describes his classroom as “chaos — the good kind,” where students are actively engaged within clearly established routines and structures. His instructional approach reflects the Ambitious Science Teaching model, emphasizing inquiry, collaboration and deep conceptual understanding.

Murray Middle School Principal Deanna Leake praised Fariss as “a reflective practitioner and a leader” within both his Professional Learning Community and the science department.

“In his short time with us, Mr. Fariss has established himself as a respected, effective educator, and we are truly fortunate to have him on our team,” Leake said.
