Muscular dystrophy walk brings awareness about the disease

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — The annual Muscle Walk was held at Hugh MacRae Park in Wilmington Saturday.

This event supports those with any type of muscular dystrophy.

There are many types of the disease, but the most well known is ALS.

The ceremonial walk recognized those you have lost someone from muscular dystrophy or currently suffers from the disease.

From young children to adults, hundreds of people walked around the park despite the rain.

“I think events like these bring awareness and understanding to something that might not seem normal,” said Fundraising Coordinator for MDA Coastal Carolinas Liz Shirley. “I know a lot of our MDA summer campers and they might seem weird to their friends, they might think they look or act different, so events like this can explain that.”

Right now, the organization is also doing their annual Muscular Dystrophy Association’s Shamrocks Against Dystrophy campaign. You can buy a shamrock at Bojangles, Lowe’s Home Improvement, Burger King, and several others businesses by making a small donation.
