N.C. annual Yam Festival returns to Tabor City
TABOR CITY, NC (WWAY) — The annual North Carolina Yam Festival has made its return to Columbus County.
The festival was born in 1946 when the town of Tabor City was named the “Yam Capitol of the World.”
While sweet potatoes are the area’s choice of crop, the name stuck, carrying on the tradition for years to come.
This year’s festival theme is ‘I yam what I yam.’
The town has been celebrating all week with events, preparing for the big day on Saturday.
Following the yam parade, there will be music, contests, street vendors and more.
“They come and they bring their relatives. They’re coming out of town. They’re taking their vacations just to come to the Tabor City Yam Festival and that is so wonderful,” NC Yam Festival President, Joseph Small, said.
Small said the people of Tabor City have been preparing for the festival since the first of the year.
