N.C. Department of Labor to host Artemis II astronaut Christina Koch

RALEIGH, NC (WWAY) — NASA Artemis II astronaut and North Carolina native Christina Koch will visit the N.C. Department of Labor later this month for a special event highlighting the connection between workplace safety, skilled trades and America’s return to crewed deep-space exploration.

Labor Commissioner Luke Farley will welcome Koch during the event, “From North Carolina Workplaces to the Moon: Safety, Skilled Trades, and the Artemis II Workforce,” on Wednesday, Aug. 26.

The event will bring together students, workforce leaders and North Carolinians connected to the Artemis II mission to recognize the workers and technical professionals whose skills support one of NASA’s most ambitious space exploration efforts.

Koch, a member of NASA’s Artemis II crew, is part of the first crewed mission around the Moon in more than 50 years. State officials say her journey from North Carolina to becoming an astronaut demonstrates how education, technical training and perseverance can lead to extraordinary career opportunities.

“Christina Koch embodies the determination, innovation, and commitment to excellence that make North Carolina proud,” Farley said in a statement. “We’re honored to welcome her to the Department of Labor as we celebrate the hardworking men and women whose skills, craftsmanship, and dedication to safety make extraordinary achievements possible.”

The event will also highlight careers in advanced manufacturing, engineering, construction, skilled trades, technology and other technical fields that contribute to innovation and economic growth.

Officials hope the event will encourage students to explore workforce training programs and careers that support industries ranging from infrastructure projects to space exploration.
