N. Topsail Beach picks contractor for terminal groin

NORTH TOPSAIL BEACH, NC (WWAY) — North Topsail Beach leaders are moving forward with plans for a terminal groin.

In July, Onslow County and the board of aldermen decided to split the $500,000 cost of an environmental impact study

Today, the board of alderman voted on a contractor to do the environmental impact study. They chose TI Coastal. This company is using the same environmental sub-consultant who worked on the Bald Head Island terminal groin. Mayor Fred Burns said that is something that swayed their decision, because Bald Head Island is the first place in NC to successfully build a terminal groin since they were banned in the state. He said Topsail Beach has also been using this company for beach re-nourishment.

A representative from Camp Lejeune showed up to the meeting. Joe Ramirez, the director of Marine Corps Liaisons for Government and External Affairs for MCB Camp Lejeune and Marine Corps Air Station New River, said the base is interested in this project. He said they need the New River Inlet to be passable.

Burns said the terminal groin is something that could help all of them.

“It’s very exciting,” Burns said. “This is something that will help the fishermen, the shrimpers and the Marine Corps out. It will help the residents of North Topsail Beach out and get sand on the beach for turtle nesting, bird nesting.”

Burns said after the impact statement is done, they are hoping construction starts in the next three years. He said it took Bald Head Island about four years.
