National Guard soldier dies in crash with NC deputies

LAUREL HILL, NC (AP) — Authorities say one National Guard soldier was killed and another injured after the men were involved in a crash with two deputies from the Scotland County Sheriff’s Office.

Highway Patrol troopers told local media outlets that the soldiers’ car ran a stop sign on NC Highway 144 in Laurel Hill on Saturday night and struck a sheriff’s office vehicle head-on.

The soldier sitting in the passenger seat, 22-year-old Andre Nelson of Lumberton, was killed. Authorities say they don’t think he was wearing a seatbelt.

The driver, 24-year-old Rasheed McLain of Fayetteville, was taken to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries.

The two sheriff’s deputies were treated and released from a hospital. Authorities are still investigating.
