Navy corpsman being awarded Silver Star at Camp Lejeune

CAMP LEJEUNE, NC (AP) — A Navy corpsman is being awarded the Silver Star at Camp Lejeune on the North Carolina coast.

Petty Officer 2nd Class Alejandro Salabarria of the 2nd Marine Raider Battalion is being decorated Friday for his actions during a 2014 deployment in Afghanistan.

Military officials say Salabarria is being decorated for his actions when his unit was assaulted by a rogue Afghan commando who wounded several other corpsmen.

Salabarria dove between the attacker and one of his wounded team members, shielding his comrade while shooting the attacker. He then helped in the evacuation of the wounded by helicopter.
