NC Highway Patrol becomes independent agency

RALEIGH, NC (WWAY) — The North Carolina State Highway Patrol is now operating as an independent agency, no longer under the umbrella of the North Carolina Department of Public Safety, according to a news release.
Effective immediately, the Highway Patrol will report directly to the Office of the Governor, with Colonel Freddy L. Johnson, Jr., continuing to serve as its commander. State officials say the change is designed to improve operational focus, accountability and public safety services.
“Today marks an important day in both the history of our agency as we proudly celebrate the 96th anniversary of the North Carolina State Highway Patrol and the beginning of a future that I believe only builds on our strong commitment to public safety,” Johnson said in a statement. “Since our founding in 1929, the Patrol has stood as a symbol of dedication, integrity, and unwavering commitment to the safety and well-being of all North Carolinians.”
The transition also includes sworn members from the NC Division of Motor Vehicles License and Theft Bureau, who are officially taking their oath as Highway Patrol officers in a ceremony held in Raleigh.
The NC State Capitol Police will remain an independent agency, still under the leadership of Col. Johnson, according to the release.
Despite the restructuring, the Department of Public Safety will continue its mission to protect residents and visitors to the state.
