NC House Democrats want incentives sweetened again
RALEIGH, NC (AP) — Democrats at the General Assembly say economic incentives in North Carolina need to be sweetened again so more middle-class adults can get better-paying jobs.
The House Democratic Caucus held a news conference Tuesday to highlight what incentives or tax breaks have been allowed to expire, are in danger of ending or are running out of money. Incentives include renewable energy tax credits, Job Development Investment Grants and the expired historic preservation and film production credits.
Rep. Susi Hamilton of Wilmington says the Republican-led legislature is sending mixed signals whether the state is open for business due to the shifting incentives landscape.
Gov. Pat McCrory is expected to offer an incentives proposal to legislators soon. Hamilton says McCrory may need Democratic votes because Republicans are split on the efficacy of incentives.
