NC jobless rate remains unchanged in August


RALEIGH, NC (AP) — North Carolina’s Commerce Department says the state’s unemployment rate in August remained unchanged from the previous month, staying at 5.9 percent.

The nationwide unemployment rate in August was 5.1 percent and has been trending lower than North Carolina’s.

The state commerce department says the number of people reporting that they are jobless increased in August by about 2,000 over the month to more than 280,000. That total has increased by more than 5,600 over the year.

The industry with the largest monthly increase in employment was construction, followed by leisure and hospitality services and manufacturing.
