RALEIGH, NC (WWAY) — The Governor’s Highway Safety Program has launched its annual “Memorial Day Click It or Ticket” campaign, urging drivers to prioritize seatbelt safety as they take to the roads this holiday weekend.

Running through June 1, the statewide campaign promotes the importance of wearing seatbelts.

“Never hesitate to buckle your seatbelt—it could be the difference between life and death,” GHSP Director Mark Ezzell said. “It’s too risky to take that chance.”

In 2023, 492 unbuckled drivers were killed in crashes across North Carolina, according to the state’s 2023 Traffic Crash Facts report. So far this year, 158 unbelted passengers or drivers have died in crashes.

Local law enforcement agencies across the state will conduct stepped-up patrols during the two-week initiative.
