NC man, NY woman win Ironman North Carolina triathlon
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) – A North Carolina man and a New York woman were the top finishers in the 2016 Ironman North Carolina triathlon.
The event, which wound around the Wilmington area, welcomed more than 2,200 athletes from around the world despite an adjusted course due to the effects of Hurricane Matthew
James Duff (M40-44) from Carrboro and Amy Farrell (F35-39) from Tupper Lake, NY, took the top honors with finish times of 6:08:58 and 6:53:13 respectively.
The 2016 PPD Ironman North Carolina and PPD Ironman 70.3 North Carolina triathlons saw athletes representing 23 countries and 45 states. Competitors ranged in age from 18 to 79.
Competitors took on a 2.4-mile swim, 56-mile bike and 26.2-mile run or a 1.2-mile swim, 56-mile bike and 13.1-mile run through the Wilmington area. The race began with a point-to-point swim at Wrightsville Beach. As a result of Hurricane Matthew, flood damage to the outer-loop of the Ironman bike course prevented access to roads otherwise used for the race. This led to an adjusted 56-mile bike course for the Ironman event, leading athletes into downtown Wilmington for their transition to the run. The run course wound through downtown and around Greenfield Lake with a finish in downtown Wilmington.
