NC Museum of Natural Sciences in Whiteville planning a spooky good time for children


LELAND, NC (WBTV) — Looking for a place to take your little ghosts and goblins to have a howling good time? Then head to the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences at Whiteville.

The Museum will host its annual Halloween Spooktacular Festival event Saturday, Oct. 26, from 10 a.m. – 4 p.m.

“We will have a lot of exciting, spooky science-type events for kids to participate in and some spooky crafts,” said Dr. Shelby Gull Laird who is the head of the Whiteville Branch of the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences.

One of the experiments kids will get to learn about is a vandergraph generator which generates static electricity.

“We can do some cool tricks with this that will make it a little spooky,” Laird said.

In addition to spine-tingling experiments, creepy crafts and ghoulish games, you can take a walk in quick sand, explore ghastly dry ice bubbles, smile silly at the fantastical photo corner, and if you dare, check out what’s behind the museum’s mystery door.

The film, “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone,” based on the bestselling children’s novel by J.K. Rowling, will be shown at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. This This 159-minute film is rated PG.

Admission is free. Children must be accompanied by at least one adult over the age of 18. This Halloween special Science Cinema event is funded by a grant from the International Paper Foundation.

The Museum also hosts a teen science café every third Friday night.

“We bring the resources of the state museum to southeastern North Carolina,” Laird said.
