NC State and Chance Shepard take the undefeated part out of UNCW’s season

WILMINGTON, NC (UNCW) — Gavin Stupienski and Nick Feight had two hits apiece for UNCW, but NC State used five pitchers to hold the Seahawks in check in a 5-2 win on Wednesday at Doak Field.

The Wolfpack improved to 7-2 with the home win and raised its record to 5-1 at Doak. UNCW, meanwhile, saw its winning streak snapped at six and dropped to 6-1 on the young season.

Evan Mendoza held game-high honors with four hits, including a home run in the sixth inning. Chance Shepard added two hits, including his fifth homer of the season for the Wolfpack.

Both of Stupienski’s hits were doubles and he added a walk.

NCSU reliever Chris Williams (1-0) picked up his first win of the season. He allowed just two hits in 2.1 innings of shutout relief.

Clay Lockamon (0-1), who was making his first collegiate start for UNCW, took the loss, allowing four runs on five hits over 2.2 innings.

Up next: The Seahawks host Penn State in a three-game series beginning on March 5 with a 2 p.m. start.

How it happened: NCSU struck for three, 2-out runs in the fourth to take a 4-1 lead. The Wolfpack plated those runs on four consecutive hits with two outs.

Notes: Stupienski doubled in the third inning to extend his career-long hitting streak to 14 games … Lockamon’s 2.2 innings were a career-long … The UNCW bullpen allowed just one run over the final 5.1 innings.
