NC superintendent visits New Hanover County

NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — Retired educators in New Hanover County got a chance to listen and talk to the state superintendent today.

Democratic NC superintended of public administration June Atkinson touched on many big issues in North Carolina education during her presentation.

Atkinson spoke out on the increase in regulation on public schools from the General Assembly. She also said charter schools and private schools continue to get more flexibility in regulation from the General Assembly.

Atkinson gave guests a chance to ask any questions. Many took that opportunity to ask about things from buses, to charter schools and even year round school.

Atkinson said there are a lot of big issues in our state that are important for the upcoming election.

“Number one, how we value our teachers, how we pay our teacher, and how we are going to recruit our teachers,” Atkinson said. “We also know that testing is an issue. I want to move to a place where we have assessment that would be embedded in learning rather than just a snapshot at the end of the year. Another issue is leadership.”

Atkinson is up for re-election this year against Republican challenger Mark Johnson.
