NCDOT: Additional adjustments led to longer than expected CFMB closure Tuesday night

NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — The Cape Fear Memorial Bridge was temporarily closed in both directions Tuesday night to allow contract crews to adjust counterweights, according to the NC Department of Transportation.
The counterweights help balance the bridge when it moves. During this time, the bridge also opened for a sailboat. The NCDOT says when the bridge opened and was then lowered, crews identified weights that needed additional adjustments.
Wilmington Police estimate the bridge was closed for around half an hour. The NCDOT says the bridge was not expected to close for that long, but the additional adjustments took longer.
This closure is related to the remaining work that needs to be done for the bridge preservation project.
