NCDOT places barricades on Third St. ahead of CFMB eastbound lane closure

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Ahead of the Cape Fear Memorial Bridge’s eastbound lane closure on Monday, preparations are already underway.

Barricades have been placed along Third St. in downtown Wilmington, preventing crossovers at Queen, Church, Nun, and Orange streets.

Drivers entering downtown on Third St. will be unable to turn left at those intersections until work on the bridge is complete.

Third St. resident Dylan Yates worries the barricades are just the start of more inconvenience to come.

“Yeah, I think it’s going to get a lot worse with the bridge,” Yates said. “We’re like a little lucky, were like right maybe block over from that other bridge, so it won’t affect us much but say we want to drive other places downtown, we’re like mentally preparing for it, yeah.”

The NCDOT’s current schedule will see all four lanes of the bridge reopen on March 31 ahead of the NC Azealea Festival before the two westbound lanes of the bridge close on April 9. Competition of the bridge restoration is slated for May 23 this year.
